Each year thousands of Washington residents have to decide whether they will file for Social Security disability benefits. Filing a claim can be a complicated and time-consuming task, and many wonder if they will have to spend years fighting for their claim. For others, the thought of being disabled is a hard reality, and they may fear that they’ll never work again once they begin receiving benefits.
The basic qualification to receive SSI or SSD disability benefits is that the person is unable to work and that their condition will last for at least one year. Some people are clearly disabled and their claims are quickly approved and their benefits start coming. Others have a more difficult time proving their case because they are younger or their condition may be hard to prove. Disability attorneys can be a great help, because they can review your medical records and help present your SSI or SSDI application in the best manner. They can also advise you if your disability is short term. Many people are able to collect disability benefits for a few years and then return to work when their health has improved.
Bellingham, Washington Disability Benefits
Present day Bellingham, Washington was incorporated as one town in 1903, after several decades of combining local communities. The first settlement, Whatcom, had begun as a mill town and grew after gold was discovered in the region. Whatcom became a busy seaport as miners and merchants used the port to receive and ship their goods. A short time later coal was discovered and a company of California investors started Bellingham and the Bellingham Bay Coal Company, which would employ more than two hundred minors at the height of its operation. Two other communities were started in the region, Fairhaven and Sehome. In 1890 the leaders of Fairhaven bought the community of Bellingham, and Sehome and Whatcom joined to form New Whatcom. This name would change to Whatcom when a law went into effect banning any town or city in Washington State to use “New” in their name. Finally the four communities merged and after some disagreement and several votes chose Bellingham as its name.
Coal mining would continue to be a major industry into the early years of the 20th century. Construction and manufacturing were also important industries and many businesses would start up employing the people of Bellingham as well as workers from nearby communities like Ferndale, Lyndon, and Lummi Island. Today the economic base of the region has shifted and there are more people employed in service industry jobs than other sectors. However, some people in the region are unable to hold any kind of job because of a disability. There are skilled and experienced disability lawyers in Bellingham and surrounding communities like Acme, Everson, and Nooksack who can review your medical history and help you file a claim with Social Security.
