Each year thousands of people in Oregon will become disabled. They may have suffered an injury or become too ill to continue working and earning an income. In order to begin receiving benefits you need to file an application or claim with the Social Security Administration. You’ll see two acronyms, SSD and SSI and wonder what the difference is and which you should file.

SSD stands for Social Security Disability and is paid for out of the FICA taxes deducted from your paycheck. There is no income level or financial restrictions, meaning you can get SSD benefits even if you own your home and your spouse has an income. The benefits are anywhere from almost nothing to a maximum of about $2300 depending on how much you earned and paid into the system. SSI stands for Supplemental Security Income and is a welfare program for disabled people. It is open to anyone, even those who did not work, however the payouts are lower than SSD. The maximum is about $674 a month and you can lose this or have it reduce if you earn a part time income that exceeds the limit. The rules can be quite complex which is why many consult with an experienced social security disability attorney when filing a claim for SSD or SSI benefits.

Albany, Oregon Disability Benefits
The earliest inhabitants of the area that is now Albany, Oregon were the Native American Kalapuya, who called the region Takenah, which means “Deep Pool”. The name likely refers to the fact that the area is where the Willamette River meets the Calapooia River and forms a deep hole. In 1846 brothers Walter and Thomas Monteith purchased the land from a squatter and founded the town they named Albany after the city in New York. For a brief time the Oregon Legislature changed the name of Albany to Takenah, but changed it back a year later in 1855. One of the earliest industries was farming and the Monteiths opened up a flour mill to process the grain. Logging was another profitable business, as Albany was surrounded by forests. These businesses provided jobs and goods for the people of Albany and other communities like Tangent, Shedd, and Crabtree.

Another major industry in Albany is metal processing as its geography is rich with rare metals such as zirconium, titanium, and hafnium. The city often refers to itself as the “Rare Metals Capital of the World”.  The Albany Research Center, a part of the National Energy Technology Laboratory, works with the metal and alloy industry and employs almost one hundred people in the region. Agriculture continues to be a big part of the region’s economic base and one of the biggest crops are grass seeds. Local farmers also grow hazelnuts, strawberries, mint, beans, and corn. Many residents have worked for decades in Albany and the surrounding towns, raising their families and supporting the community. However, some people have had to leave their jobs because of a disabling illness or injury. If you can no longer work and need help getting approved for Social Security benefits, there are experienced attorneys in the region who can help you with your claim.
